Streetscape Project
Streetscape Project Work Session
On Monday, April 28 at 7:00, the City of Augusta will host a work session to discuss this summer' upcoming Streetscape project.
Water Meter Replacement

Starting the week of January 21 (weather permitting), the City of Augusta will begin replacing the service connections in the 500 block downtown as part of the water line project, and in preparation for this summer's streetscape project.

Work will begin in the northeast corner of the 500 block and progress south.  Once the east side of the street is complete, City workers will then begin replacing the meters on the north and south ends of the west side, with work commencing in the mid-block.

During this process, service may be interrupted for brief periods of time when lines are being connected. However, the City will do their best to make these interruptions as brief and convenient as possible.   In addition, because sidewalks must be removed in order to access the meters, re-grind will be placed in these areas to eliminate any difficulties in accessing businesses.

Please remember that the City is responsible for replacing the service line from the water main to the meter, but it is the property owner's responsibility to maintain the line from the meter into the building. The City will connect the building owner's line to the new meter. Because of aging water lines, this may be a great opportunity to make updates to your line and save money while the line will already be exposed.  Once the streetscape project is complete, the cost to uncover the line will increase significantly.  You are encouraged to contact your plumber regarding your water line.

If you decide to replace your water line, please contact John Ball, Water Superintendent, 775-4549, and he will help to coordinate schedules between the City workers and your plumber.

Message From Main Street:

Streetscape Project Credit Should Be Shared

On Monday, September 24, at 6:30 p.m., the City Council will be having a special meeting to discuss the upcoming Streetscape Project.  I encourage not only downtown stakeholders on this issue, but community members to attend.  It will be very exciting to see what great things are in store for our historic downtown.

This $1.8 million project will drastically enhance the image of our downtown.  However, it must be noted that this project has been made possible because of the support and commitment of the entire community.

While the grant application is full of facts and drawings, what really got the attention of the State was Augustans' willingness to take part in enhancing their downtown.    Augusta was not sitting idly, as some communities do, waiting for the State to come in and assist them, they took initiative.

Letters of endorsement were written not only by downtown merchants, but by the residents and elected officials.  Not only did the City agree to a 20% match, but many organizations such as Save our State Street, Chamber of Commerce, Arts Council, Historical Society and Downtown Augusta, Inc., have contributed immensely to making Augusta a place you are proud of.  Everyone worked together on this project and it shows what amazing things can be done when people join forces.  This is such an exciting project for not only our downtown, but our entire community.  It will make us stand out and show visitors that if we care so much as to invest money in our downtown, maybe it's worth checking out.

For a community Augusta's size, this project is a huge undertaking, but it shows that the possibilities to our community are endless.  If we all work together, who knows what can be accomplished!
